It was regarded as just another Chinese flu bug, just like Swine and Avian flu. However, when the virus jumped borders to Europe the world started taking note. All focus turned to China and what this new ‘bug’ was doing to them. No-one ever thought about the affect on the travel industry.

The very technological advancement that brought the world so much closer, was now the form that was bringing the virus to the rest of the world. Each year brings new innovations in some form or another, 2020 will, unfortunately, be known as the year of Covid-19, responsible for the death of more than a million people. Not quite as many as the Spanish flu of 1918, but considering that science and healthcare is so much more advanced, the number of deaths is appalling.

The majority of industries are paying the price of social distancing and lock-down, however the foreign tourism and travel industry is clearly one of the worst-hit sectors and the ban on international flights has all but shut down this segment entirely. Estimates by the World Travel and Tourism Council show that the coronavirus pandemic is putting up to 50 million jobs in the global travel and tourism sector at risk, with travel likely to slump by at least 25% this year with Asia being the most affected continent. According to the Council

• Once the outbreak is over, it could take up to 10 months for the industry to recover

• The tourism industry currently accounts for 10% of global GDP. Add to this accommodation: lodges, B&B, cottages, hotels, motels, chalets, guest houses, even camping facilities. With all of these there are the food and beverage sections, clothing manufactures and stores, arts and crafts sellers, entertainment and cultural shows.

• Travel agents, tour guides, tour operators, game rangers, tour ambassadors on cruise ships
