An ‘All-British’ affair
In the summer of 1955 Sinai-based Vampires of the Royal Egyptian Air Force (REAF) made frequent incursions into Israeli territory, often reaching as far inland as Hatzor and Tel-Nof airbases without counter. Lacking effective early warning radar, on 18 August 1955, the Israeli Air Force sent four ‘First Jet’ 117 Squadron Meteors from Ramat David airbase in the north to Hatzor. Eleven days later a pair of these Meteors flown by Lieutenants Yehuda Peri and Mordechai Lavon intercepted four REAF Vampires in the first all-jet dogfight in the history of the region’s warfare. Lavon claimed one as a kill and although IAF intelligence monitored Egyptian radio confirming one was lost, its wreckage was not found, so no official credit was given.
On 1 September 1955 two Meteors were scrambled to intercept a brace of Vampires that had crossed into Israeli territory. Captains Yoash Tzidon and Aharon Yoeli, piloting Meteor FR.9 No. 36, climbed to 5,000 feet and as they turned, ground control vectored them onto the Vampires. What happened next was recounted by Captain Yoeli.
