April is an exciting month in the garden.

Birds such as tits, blackbirds and robins are well into their breeding seasons, along with all manner of insects, including bumblebees, hoverflies and butterflies. Our ponds are full of tadpoles and we may even hear the pig-like snuffles of hedgehogs courting in the night. Avoid the temptation to tidy up: long grass, along with weeds such as dandelion and dock, provide food for a range of moths, whose caterpillars are so needed by those further up the food chain. The more caterpillars your garden provides, the more birds and hedgehogs there will be, the more birdsong and late night snuffles will fill your ears for many springs to come.

We love July

July is an island floating between the joy of June and the slightly fatigued month of August. It's a grown-up month: the year has shrugged off its adolescent exuberances, the weather is (hopefully) warm enough for ice cream to be one of your five a day, the sea should be swimmable without (too much) danger of hypothermia and thoughts will be of holiday shenanigans and family barbecues. School's out this month, the next tranche of glorious summer colour is washing across our borders and it's my birthday. Lots of reasons to give three rousing cheers for July!
