How To Deal With Uterine Fibroids
Hysterectomy or removal of uterus is a common surgery. One in 30 women undergoes this life changing operation and the most common cause of this is uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are lumps that grow on the uterus. Fibroids can grow on the inside, on the outside, or in the wall of your uterus. These fibroids are sometime mistaken as cancer, but they are not. These can remain untreated as long as they don’t cause any problems. These are common in women in their 30s and 40s. What is surprising is that women go through their lives without even knowing that they have fibroids.
WHAT CAUSES FIBROIDS?
Actually, there are no known causes for this condition. But these are some of the factors that may contribute to their growth:
Genetic changes: Many fibroids contain changes in genes that differ from those in normal uterine muscle cells.
Hormonal changes: Estrogen and progesterone, two hormones that stimulate development of the uterine lining during each menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy, appear to promote the growth of fibroids. Fibroids contain more estrogen and progesterone receptors than normal uterine muscle cells do. Fibroids tend to shrink after menopause due to a decrease in hormone production.
