Soap Star Ada Nicodemou Talks To Trudie Mcconnochie About Her Struggle WithPerfectionism, Staying Healthy And Her Greatest Love.
If you happen to bump into Ada Nicodemou around Sydney – she’s always up for a fan photo, by the way – don’t be surprised if she seems like she’s in a hurry. The bubbly Home and Away star has a to-do list longer than her popular character Leah Patterson-Baker’s list of relationship disasters.
Fortunately, her multitasking game is strong. In fact, when the 41-year-old phones Good Health and Wellbeing for our interview, she’s driving home after a long day of filming – “I do my phone calls in the car – when I’m at home with [my son] Johnas, I don’t have my phone anywhere near me because I want to try and focus on the moment more.”
Ada admits she’s eternally got a lot on her plate, and she knows reducing that mental load is paramount when it comes to her health and wellbeing.
“I do get overwhelmed,” says Ada, who has been on Home and Away for 18 years. “I’ve been evaluating how to simplify my life because I am bad at saying ‘no’. I’m one of those people who does about 20 things in the morning before I leave home and every time I’ve got a day off, I’ll add five to 10 appointments in, and I need my house to be perfect, and all that stuff, then I run myself into the ground.
“I was waking up tired all the time because my mind wouldn’t stop. So now I’m trying to say no to things, I’m trying to write down lists, I’m deciding what’s more important than others, and putting the phone down.”
Battling perfectionism
The 41-year-old star says she first realised how important it was to make sure she didn’t get overwhelmed when she became mum to Johnas, now six, her son with ex husband Chrys Xipolitas.
