If you practise yoga postures, you know that it makes you feel good, often happy. Does that feeling “just happen”? No, it’s the result of a specific mechanism within you, and if you learn the workings of that mechanism – your inner “technology of happiness” – you can not only strengthen that good feeling, but also be better able to sustain it in everyday life. Interested?
The Key is so familiar to us that most people overlook it: happiness causes an “upward” sensation in the body, and unhappiness a “downward” sensation. In fact, the reverse is also true: we can induce happiness by inducing an upward sensation – and prevent unhappiness by preventing a downward sensation.
Those sensations are not esoteric; we feel them every day. They are movements of prana (subtle energy, life-force) within the body, and the techniques of yoga enable us to control our energy and take charge of our own happiness. Let’s look briefly at how to move in that direction.
Begin with Energy Awareness
To control energy, we need first to be aware of it. The breath gives us a way. Every time you inhale, energy rises in the body, and every time you exhale, it descends. Stop reading for a moment and notice those sensations; it’s easy to feel those movements of energy.
