ISSUE: wood waste
Trees are our friends. From preserving our climate by sequestering CO2 to making this planet habitable by providing oxygen in return, one might even say we owe our lives to these green goliaths. When used sustainably, trees also provide us with materials for constructing shelters, generating energy, and more. Unfortunately, this beautiful and precious resource is often squandered.
In urban areas, wood from sawn lumber, pruned branches, and shipping pallets often goes to waste. According to the Construction and Demolition Recycling Organization, wood comprises most of the 325 million tons of annual construction waste, which is one of the largest components of the solid waste stream in the US. For example, out of California’s 3.8 million tons of annual urban wood waste, just 12 percent is diverted from the landfill. Much of this wood could be recycled for further use or used for energy production.
