Big Event In The Diary? Bikini Body Panic Setting In? Before You Type ‘Lose 5Kg Fast’ Into Google, Stop And Read This. Your Body And Mind Will Thank You For It

The New Less Obvious Dangers Of... Crash Dieting
It’s 3pm on a Tuesday and you should have your eyes and attention trained on the Excel spreadsheet in front of you. Instead, they’ve been diverted to your weather app; specifically, the forecast for Bali 14 days from now. Thoughts turn to the inevitable bikini pics and the lengths you’re willing to go to forge a flat stomach between now and the departure lounge.

While we all know that so-called summer bodies are built in winter and good nutrition is for life, the pre-holiday body panic can feel as difficult to opt out of as the poolside hotdogs-or-legs snap. And it isn’t just an impending getaway that has the power to make you part with salary and sense in the name of slimming down stat – there’s also the onslaught of summer weddings, parties etc.

So, what is it about these datein-the-diary events that makes so many women want to shrink? “These occasions tend to hit home because we feel on display,” explains psychologist Jess Baker. “Underpinning this is the fear that we’re going to be judged. We seek other people’s approval and mistakenly believe that changing our bodies and looking our ‘best’ is the way to win this.” Add social media to the mix and that perceived judging panel can quickly balloon.

RUNNING ON EMPTY

There’s one major problem with this whole scenario: suddenly cull kilojoules out of nowhere and not only will your stomach grumble, your hormones are bound to fight back. They’re the biological equivalent of couriers, delivering messages around the body, so if you do things that interfere with their natural rhythm, shit will go down. It’s an inconvenient truth that your body has a healthy-weight zone in which it would like to stay. And, given that it’s motivated by the historic sole purpose of procreation, the ideal muscle/fat ratio may not chime with your bikini goals.

The AI Revolution Is Coming: Here's How To Future -Proof Your Career

Robots are coming for your job. Not only yours, but another 20 million jobs around the world over the next 10 years. That’s how media outlets reported on the results of a 2019 paper released by global forecaster Oxford Economics.
