'Hops And Coffee Helped Shape My Life'
The first plant I ever grew
It was a sessile oak tree, Quercus petraea, planted in our Cumbrian home my parents called ‘Beyond The Fields’.
The plant that shaped the gardener I am today
Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, is one of the few trees that survive on Cumbrian fells on or near bare rock and browsed by Herdwick sheep and rabbits. My dad had a picture of one in his office when he was head forester for the National Trust in the Lake District. I have it in mine now.
My favourite plant in the world
