When the team at PINS Studio sat down to discuss the approach that they would take in designing the home, they saw that the space, like so many other older models, was in dire need of a major revamp and a strategic reshaping of its internal layout. “It was easy to see why,” says Interior Designer Tan Si Yuan. “The existing space was dull and outdated; there was also a lift constructed right in the middle of the house, which somewhat obstructed the internal flow. Looking at the home from a ‘big picture’ point of view, it was crucial to first eliminate the redundant corners and dead spaces around the key areas, so that we can free up sufficient space to work with.”
While it had become evident to the team that they had to achieve a certain level of ‘connectivity’ between the rooms, the onus was also on them to work around an open space concept – one immensely and increasingly popular for fans of modern home interiors. The goal was then to create pockets of space that would provide the room for the homeowners’ various lifestyle activities, while keeping the aesthetics simple, stylish, and cohesive. To do this, the PINS team decided that they would remove some of the walls and columns and implemented statement-making elements that would serve to draw the spaces together.
