Creating a space as impressive as this one takes teamwork, says Shaun Dunbar, principal designer at Kitchens by JS Geddes, who brought the room to life with the help of friends old and new.
“Our talented installations team developed a great relationship with the builder and the architect on the project, liaising with them from the beginning and throughout to ensure its success,” says the award-winning designer. “We also worked with Susan Bremner, of Homes & Interiors Ltd. We have a fantastic relationship with her – she has looked after the interior design on many of our jobs.” Lynn Harris of Passionate About Gardens, meanwhile, took care of the outside space, and there was specialist cabinetmaking input from Character Joinery.
The multifunctional space – it’s a kitchen-dining-living room, with a utility room and boot room worked in too – is contained within the extension of a traditional Art Deco-style property on the south side of Glasgow. The extension was built specifically to house the kitchen, so the Geddes team were involved in the planning of the room before any work began on site.

You might think the process is purely creative, but designing knitted textiles requires a deep understanding of geometry and pattern calculations. It is intricate and often mathematical. I have learned that knitting demands a constant balance between artistry and engineering. Creating a new textile involves not only selecting colours and yarns but also considering the tensile strength, elasticity and drape of the material. That way, I ensure the final product is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. To me, this blend of creativity and technical precision is a fascinating aspect of knitted textile design.
