Know The Watchouts Before Investing In Mid-Cap Mutual Funds

The mid-cap funds as a category has generated a return of nearly 75 per cent over the last year.

Some of the funds have delivered over 85 per cent in the same period and what is heartening is the fact that even the long-term performance of the mid-cap fund category is decent. The average category returns over 3-5-10 years have been about 14 per cent, 15 per cent and 17 per cent respectively.

Going by the recent performance, making a decision to invest in mid-cap funds may not be the right approach. In fact, one should not base one’s decision to invest in mid-cap MF based on market situations. Midcaps funds are relatively more volatile than large caps and only if your goal is far, allocate some portion into them based on your risk profile. Consider them to give a kicker of a return to your long-term portfolio but be ready for big downsides over the short to medium term. Remember, mid-caps are those which lag behind large-cap in terms of market-cap and are largely undiscovered by the market participants.
