The full Montgomery?
Reopening the Montgomery Canal through into mid-Wales could be on the cards, as restoration leaders enlist the aid of local politicians and look for major Welsh funding.
Craig Williams (Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire) and Russell George (Conservative member of the Welsh Assembly for Montgomeryshire) are backing a bid for the canal’s reopening to be supported by the Mid Wales Growth Deal Fund, a pot of money which has been pledged £55m by the UK Government with hopes that this will be doubled by the Welsh Assembly. The two have met with John Dodwell and Michael Limbrey, officials of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust, to discuss a bid.
Meanwhile, progress continues on the English length with opening to Crickheath Wharf well on the way, and plans in hand for next year’s project to reinstate School House Bridge, removing the last major obstacle to reopening to the border at Llanymynech.
