The Harvard- and Duke-trained physician moved to Charlotte with her husband in 1998 so they could both take jobs as radiologists. The couple raised three kids, all competitive rowers, in their Foxcroft home. “It’s nonstop at work, and the days are very long,” Rivera says. “Then I come home and make dinner. I end up falling asleep on the couch.”
She remembers the day she told her husband she felt she could paint.
