We chat to CHRIS ANG from Woody Antique House about how the business has grown over the past 18 years, and why Dempsey Hill provides a unique shopping spot.
When was Woody Antique House set up and why?
The business was started by my parents-in-law back in 2000. They came to know about Dempsey from a relative who’d been involved in some tourism business here back in the 1990s, and although the area was not that well known then, it was popular among the expat community for Asian furniture and carpet shopping.
Their plan was to focus on Asian furniture, so they felt it would be a good place to start as it’s easily accessible and close to our expat customers who stay in the Orchard, Holland, Farrer and Bukit Timah areas. Our first showroom was at Block 7, the farthest block inside the Dempsey Hill area. About nine years ago, we shifted to our current locations, and we now have the largest furniture showroom floor space in Dempsey.
What products can customers expect to find when they visit?
Our origins are in selling Burmese teak, Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian vintage antique and reproduction furniture – my parents-in-law have a friend in China who helps them with the sourcing and restoration of these pieces.
