MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS

From counting steps and encouraging standing to evaluating how hard you went in that HIIT workout, smart watches have largely focused on improving our physical health – but that’s now set to shift thanks to new research into the ways wearable technology can track anxiety, stress and depression. A UK study found success using a new Apple Watch app to monitor and assess people with major depressive disorder. By having participants complete cognitive tests, the app was able to evaluate attention, mood, memory and reaction speed throughout the day. In addition, new discoveries into the link between our heart rate variability (the time between beats) and circadian patterns mean wearable devices that track both have the potential to screen your risk of mental illness with new-found accuracy.
