50 Things To Do In Northeast India

Not all travellers are the same; you could be an adrenaline junkie looking to jump off a cliff for fun, a shopaholic looking for the best bargains, a nature lover out to spot some rare birds and animals, a foodie on a mission to devour the delectable and discover the bizarre or a lost soul looking for a second home, no matter which category you fall under, Northeast India has you covered.

Comprising of eight states, each with its distinct culture and flavour, the region is sort of a ‘bento box’ that has something for everyone. For the longest time, the region did not pop up on travel bucket lists because of issues like insurgency and poor connectivity, but now, things are slowly changing. Now that peace largely prevails, and the states are better connected with the rest of the country and to each other, more and more travellers are now discovering what makes this part of the country special.

Of course, the region is too vast to be covered in a single trip. In fact, even travellers residing in the region are not too aware of many of its secrets. But if you have to truly experience all that the region has to offer, here are some things that you must add to your checklist.

Assam

#1 - Spot the Rhino

If you are in Assam, then you should not leave before taking a picture of the famous one-horned rhino. There are many wildlife sanctuaries across Assam but the ones where you can get real close to the magnificent beast are Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Pobitora is easily accessible from Guwahati and great for visitors who don’t have much time on their hands. Keep in mind that the parks close down during the monsoons so make sure to check before you plan your trip.

#2 - Spend the Night at a Heritage Bungalow

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
