Madan Kamdev in Assam offers the curious mind just the right amount of mystery and mythology.
Assam is a storehouse of astounding monuments and sculptures that leaves unsuspecting travellers and uninformed locals awestruck when they come in contact with the artistic mastery or the legends that surround them. For many living in the State, Madan Kamdev may not ring any bells but this archaeological site offers the curious mind with just the right amount of mystery and mythology. Known as the ‘Khujaraho of the East’, it is located at Baihata Chariali, which is some 35 kilometres from Guwahati.
First Impressions
The first thing you notice once you reach is a sign board of Archaeological Department next to a well-decorated gate. Surrounded by dense and thick forests as well as small water bodies, it is definitely a refreshing break from the concrete jungle that we have become used to. Stairs lead to the main entrance of the temple, which looks like a repository of sculptures carved in stone. It has close to 500 stone sculptures, maybe even more, and each portrays a different story from Indian mythology. Some tell stories of romance and gaiety, others of culture, while a few depict eroticism. These sculptures of yesteryear showcase the best of interesting stories and skilled artistry.
