In a society that still believes in conventional careers like medicine, engineering and civil service, it is not always easy for talented Northeasterners to go down a path less chosen such as dance. Classically trained danseuse Pranamee Bhagawati could have chosen a ‘safer and stable’ path but instead, she decided to follow her heart. Her hard work and dedication has not only helped her find success in life, but it has also opened avenues for her to reach out to fellow artistes and help them realize their dreams as well.
Pranamee is not only limited to dance, and has also dabbled in acting and writing, in addition to being a cultural activist. She is also the founder of AMRAPALI (Society for ARTS)®.
Embracing Dance
For Pranamee, dancing is a way of life. ‘I started learning dance when I was in kindergarten. My father was an angel, he decided that I should go for dancing lessons when he noticed I would sway my body whenever songs played on the television. From then, till now, my whole life has been about dance. I’ve learnt to see goodness in the bad, light in the darkness and positivity in the negatives, and this is only possible because dance made me conceive, perceive and act with optimism.’

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS
People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
