The 'Reel' Magic
Eclectic Northeast|April 2019

An exclusive interview with the talented Soma Laishram who has won the hearts of movie lovers in Manipur and beyond.

The 'Reel' Magic

Hailing from Imphal, Soma is a talented actor and singer. She has appeared in numerous Manipuri films since 2010. Not only that, she has also appeared in teleplays, dramas and was even an anchor for DDK Imphal. Talented and hardworking, she has made a name for herself not only in Manipur but also across the country. We find out more about her journey so far.

Tell us a little about yourself and your childhood

I would say that I have always been a happy-go-lucky person. I was fascinated with dancing and singing from a very young age, and have been very lucky to get the opportunity to be part of DDK Imphal, first as a child artiste and then as programme presenter later. From my childhood till now, I have been performing whenever I get an opportunity, be it at a local function or school or competition, and now professionally as an actor or model.

How did you get interested in acting? Did you participate in any acting workshop or have you perfected your skills while on the job?

While I was always interested in dancing and singing, I never thought of becoming an actress, but I guess the performances during my younger days has laid the path to becoming who I am today.

No, I have not participated in any acting workshops but I have trained in traditional Manipur dance and classical music. I think it was more of learning on the job for me.

Out of all the films that you have acted in, which is the most memorable and why?

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
