The old not-tonight-darling-I-have-a-headache cliché may just be related to the man’s cheap cologne. Researchers at Ruhr University, Bochum, and at Technische Universität in Dresden, both in Germany, have found that specific fragrances could strongly ignite a woman’s sex drive. Researchers have also found that the scent of hedione (chemical name methyl dihydrojasmonate), a compound synthesised in the 1960s by a chemist seeking to reproduce the intoxicating scent of jasmine, activated a specific pheromone receptor in the nose that causes the brain to make associations with mind-blowing sex. Based on research, both scientific and completely unscientific, we drew up a list of fragrances that will get you in the mood anytime, anywhere.

VANILLA

Traditional Chinese rituals have emphasised the connection between smell and sexual attraction and that’s the reason behind the wide use of vanilla in their perfumes. Authors Harvey Wickes Felter and John Uri Lloyd, in their book King’s American Dispensatory, published in 1898, recommended vanilla extract to ‘stimulate sexual propensities’. The sweet scent of vanilla is known to induce feelings of euphoria and relaxation that perfectly sets the mood for a romp in the sack.
