Out of the shadows of England’s iconic Lord’s, Edgbaston Cricket Ground, one of the venues for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, has had its defining moments – including the greatest game ever played.
Iconic backdrops can make for iconic memories. You can’t remember Roger Federer’s victories without the lush lawns of Wimbledon, or his nemesis without the red clay of Roland Garros. Cricket is no different.
Most of England’s iconic moments in the sport are reserved for Lord’s. But even the home of cricket can’t boast of witnessing one of the best Test matches ever played, or the greatest ODI in history. Or India’s stunning 2013 Champions Trophy victory under former captain MS Dhoni, whose use of spinners during the tense final – in which India beat England by 5 runs in a rain-curtailed game – was inspiring. Those moments all unfolded in the quiet and leafy surroundings of Birmingham’s Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
This month, India incidentally begin the defence of that title at Edgbaston, against Pakistan, in what is sure to be an exciting match. It’s worth noting that Pakistan have never beaten India in a World Cup or World T20 fixture, but have had success in the Champions Trophy. (One such win came, again, at Edgbaston in 2004, when Inzamamul-Haq’s team emerged winners by the skin of their teeth.)
