Following their smashing success in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, these new Indian cricketers are gunning for the spotlight in the big league
The chasm between potential and touching the heights of sporting excellence is littered with shattered dreams of unrealised talent. Coaches are never short on stories of talented and hardworking youngsters with dreams of conquering the big stage who’ve faded away for reasons beyond anyone’s control – from untimely injuries to not being at the right place at the right time, and everything in between. For the Tendulkar generation, Vinod Kambli’s career serves as an illuminating example. More recently, try to recall Reetinder Singh Sodhi: vice-captain of the 2008 Junior World Cup-winning team, once hailed as the next Kapil Dev, who simply faded away.
It’s this reality that the seven cricketers, who were part of the recent Under-19 World Cup-winning squad, will face in this year’s IPL, their first. Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi, Manjot Kalra, Abhishek Sharma and Anukul Roy played vital roles in the team that smothered Australia in the Final in windy Mount Maunganui.
