Marriage. Money. Motherhood

The holy trinity making up the idea of ‘having it all’ for a woman might need a desperate shake-up

Dhvani Solani
Marriage. Money. Motherhood

I am an absolute sucker for ridiculous Facebook quizzes. Which Disney princess is my soulmate? Belle. Which city should I be living in? Berlin. How likely is it that I’m going to hell? Tremendously. But, the one quiz I absolutely refuse to take is the one that asks which decade I belong to. Even with my undying love for hippie dresses, I am grateful to have been born in an age which made it totally normal for my parents to treat my brother and me equally, without differentiating in the educational and lifestyle choices given to us.

Allow me to check my privilege before you do it for me. I live in an Indian metropolis, have a college education, a career of my choosing, and am married to a man of my choosing. If I look at my maternal lineage, I am the first to hold a full-time job, contribute to the finances involved in running a house, and probably the first to think of having a child as a choice, not an obligation. I’m not saying it’s an easy road. But I imagine that feminism worked out wonderfully for me, in the sense of giving me the choice to HAVE IT ALL.
