THE H&M STORY

If there is a brand with a Midas touch, it appears to be H&M. The first Hennes women’s clothing store opened, possibly without expectations of becoming a global conglomerate, in Västerås, Sweden, in 1947. (Yes, India got her freedom and budget shoppers, a reason to smile). Their growth trajectory was rapid; but the Hennes & Mauritz brand really came to be in 1968, when Founder Erling Persson, bought out Mauritz Widforss, an adjacent hunting and fishing equipment store, in 1968. Interestingly, this flagship H&M still exists in Stockholm! The last half a century has seen H&M become as ubiquitous as McDonalds, boasting 4,000 stores in 62 countries, and opening an average of 35 new stores each month. Mumbai is set to see its first store opening at Phoenix Mills, on the 13th of this month.
