Rolex cements its position as a champion supporter of cinema as it celebrates the opening of The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
The Magical World Of Movies
The largest filmmaking museum and institution in the US, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened its doors to the public on Sept 30, 2021. As a founding supporter of this pioneering institution, Swiss luxury watchmaker Rolex continues to play an important role in the preservation of cinema and the transmission of knowledge and skills to the future generation. Founded by Hans Wilsdorf, the brand has been linked to the world of cinema for decades.

Designed by Pritzker Prizewinning architect Renzo Piano, the museum is a massive space made up of 50,000 sq ft of galleries, two theatres and a 1,000-seat auditorium. The main building is the Saban Building, named after philanthropist Cheryl Saban and her media mogul husband Haim Saban, who donated US$50 million (S$67 million) to the museum. Its design honours the original Wilshire facade, a landmarked Streamline Moderne structure built in 1939. The Sphere Building, made of glass, concrete and steel, houses the Geffen Theater and Dolby Terrace. Connecting the museum’s two buildings on the fifth floor is the Barbra Streisand Bridge, a true architectural gem.

Rolex is an avid supporter for young filmmakers through its mentoring programme, and its timepieces have had countless appearances in iconic films.
