Rama V instils in Rachel Ng a newfound appreciation for Thai food with a fine-dining experience that treads the line between tradition and modernity
If Thailand is considered the Land of Smiles, then Rama V has brought a piece of the country to Malaysia. Aside from an airy interior dining section, Rama V boasts of a private courtyard styled after traditional
Thai houses in the vicinity of Jalan U-Thant. Much like the architecture, the food is a balancing act of modernity and tradition. Ingredients not usually used in Thai cooking make surprise appearances that intrigue the palate. You don’t merely want a single taste, as it draws you in and makes you crave it.
We start off with a grilled lamb cutlet with hot basil sauce, crispy almonds, wolfberry fruit and green pea puree. The lamb is superbly grilled and melts in your mouth with the slight heat of the hot basil sauce tempered with green pea puree. Its smoky flavours go well with the toasted almond slices while the hot basil sauce remind me of a rich Thai curry. Paired with the Princess Fa-Ying cocktail, the heat from the tequila, spices and lime only serves to intensify the flavours.
