In honour of their recent anniversary, Rita Wilson shared a sweet throwback photo of her wedding to Tom Hanks, marking 34 years of marital bliss. But it hasn’t been all picture perfect for the couple who rocked Hollywood with their romance – nor the family he left behind.

Tom almost ruined his career when he fell in love with Rita on the set of adventure comedy Volunteers in 1984.

Having won legions of fans thanks to hit movies Splash and Bachelor Party, Tom risked it all three years later by leaving his wife and two young kids for Rita, and faced a huge backlash over his curated ‘family man’ image.

While Tom and Rita, both 65, are now one of showbiz’s most successful couples with two sons of their own, the hurt left behind for his first wife Samantha Lewes and their children, Colin and Elizabeth, took decades to heal.

“Colin and Elizabeth were only 10 and 5 when their dad left their mum,” says a longtime family pal. “It was devastating for Elizabeth, especially having it all play out in the press while her mother was in so much pain.
