Luxury comes in all shapes and sizes, from supercars for revheads to hyperrealistic rings for queens of couture. Here are 12 options to consider when you’re feeling the urge to splurge
Smooth Sailing
When the sea gets rough, eat saltines to settle your stomach, or so the old salts say. Better still, step aboard the Foiler from Enata Marine, a 9.5-metre hydrofoil that cuts through choppy water by skimming 1.5 metres above it at 40 knots (74km/h). This flying super yacht is anchored by four foils that keep her extremely stable and resistant to wave interference. Propulsion comes from two 320HP BMW engines hooked up to two generators and two electric motors. At cruising speed, the vessel’s 300-litre fuel tank gives her a range of 240 kilometres. The retractable foils are strong enough to support the weight of eight passengers on the boat as she flies above the water’s surface. With her sleek style and cutting-edge hull design, you don’t need to be an old salt to know she’s going to turn heads wherever she goes.
Thin is In
Piaget has long been a leader in creating ever-thinner luxury timepieces as the pioneer of ultra flat mechanical movements in the 1950s. But the brand has outdone itself with the Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch, which is an unbelievable 2mm thick—just half a millimetre more than the diameter of a pinhead. It took four years of painstaking research to develop the thinnest hand-wound watch in the world. A new, high-tech, ultra-rigid, cobalt-based alloy saved precious fractions of a millimetre, and the case doubles as the exterior component and the movement’s main plate to save more space. Piaget has filed five patents to protect its latest technological innovations. Yes, it’s a concept watch, so it’s not going into production yet, but its engineering advances are expected to benefit future models.
