Thankfully, stardom hasn’t hit Vikrant yet. He is humble, grounded, bursting with opinion on everything and loves good conversations. His on-screen debut as Ranveer Singh’s mucker in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera was something that flipped his life around—interestingly it was a role that he had almost lost.
‘Lootera was my first ever movie audition and initially someone else got the part. I was disheartened, to say the least. But after about two weeks, I got a call again asking if I was still interested and there I was, playing Devdas Mukherjee for the next five months.’
In the last three years that Vikrant has spent in cinema, his career has shown a swift rise. He has managed a couple of big commercial films with production giants—played the clever confidant in Lootera with Phantom, the brooding Rana Khanna in Dil Dhadakne Do with Excel. But he was most comfortable working in Alankrita Srivastav’s small budget film, Lipstick Under My Burkha. ‘I’m more of a rationalist when it comes to my personal approach towards life. And when Alankrita approached me with Lipstick…, we were talking about women in an extremely messed up society. The movie has a very real premise. I have seen such women very closely in my life and I wanted to be a part of It. I am very proud that I got the part,’ says the actor. After winning accolades at MAMI this year, the movie has travelled to film festivals in Tokyo, Stockholm, Kyho, Rome, and is being appreciated world over. And recently, Vikrant is stunning cinema-goers with his much anticipated performance as the main protagonist Shutu in Konkona Sen Sharma’s A Death in the Gunj.
