Back to Nature
Red Magazine|March 2017

Caught up in daily routine, we are all Cunwilling participants of the rat-race, where everybody is in a hurry to reach the destination. We are so busy building a life that we forget to ‘live’.We need to catch a breath and sync ourselves to be in tune with nature.‘Nature is a gym and membership is free’ says an adage.

Back to Nature
True, nature does provide us with the best therapy, in the form of trekking. While there are other ways to unwind, such as a luxury tour in suave hotels, shopping or ‘retail therapy’, going out for drinks and movies, trekking brings out our inner unchallenged and hungry for-adventure side. We got in touch with Mr.N.Nageswara Rao, President of Youth Hostel Association of India (YHAI), Visakhapatnam District Unit (VDU), to find out how trekking helps us to connect with that inner self...

The first step

I have been associated with YHAI for 30 years. Incidentally, I was the first journalist to bike around the country, covering 10,064 km in 45 days. Trekking has been going on in the region for decades, but it was Mr.Narva Prakash Rao who saw the need to promote adventure on a larger scale. He established YHAI in Vizag, the first of its kind in the united Andhra Pradesh.

Membership

YHAI fee is Rs.50 per annum for members between 14 to 18 years and Rs.150 per annum for those above 18 years. For two years, it is Rs.250. The lifetime membership fee is Rs.2,000. This membership card is valid all over the world, flaunting it one can stay at any hostel around the world. Currently, we have 350 members in VDU.
