Seasoned politician Amar Singh is always a pleasure to talk to simply for his forthrightness. In this interview too, he is at his candid best while sharing his thoughts on politics, the Bachchans, Jaya Prada and more…
He was running high fever when I met him at his newly appointed residence at Chhatarpur in New Delhi, but maverick politician Amar Singh was every bit professional while posing for pictures and countering the salvos fired at him. This is his birthday month, as on January, 27, he turns 62.
Singh had a tight schedule for the weekend, and was travelling back from Dehradun on the day of our appointment. I had to wait at his home for some time till he could reach Delhi, during which time, his wife, Pankaja, graciously enquired about my requirement for tea or coffee several times. A simple lady, Pankaja, apologised for the delay and made small talk in fluent English. But, left the photographer and I to do a recce of possible locations for the shoot. Amar Singh’s residence is a sprawling farm that has all the trappings of an upscale home, complete with a private gym, swimming pool, a movie auditorium that can seat up to 30 people, and a huge green area. It is done up with artifacts and paintings collected from all over India.
Amar Singh walked into the centrally heated living room with his secretary in tow. As we settled down on his plush sofa, it was quite evident that he was under the weather. But, conversation flowed effortlessly once we began the interview.
