A dictionary defines regret as - a feeling of sadness about something, grief about a mistake that you have made, and a nagging wish that it could have been better or different.
Everyone makes several mistakes in their life knowingly or unknowingly due to anger, ego, ignorance, etc. And these mistakes may cause various degrees of harm to self or others. For example, you may slap a close relative or friend out of anger due to some disagreement and the friendship may get permanently ruined. While you may have felt it was right then, as you grow older that incident may start haunting you. Similarly, there could be other mistakes you have done related to your career, friendship, money matters, investments, lost opportunities, etc. All these may come back to haunt you years later causing deep stress and regret.
While you may have to live with certain regrets for life many others can be reduced if you start making amends and corrections if it is not too late. To learn how to deal with past regrets, you must first recognize or acknowledge the consequences of what you did or didn't do. For example, the next time you erupt in anger try to remember what damages that anger did to you in the past. This can prevent you from making the same mistake again.
Unless you are a heartless iceberg, feeling regret and sad at what you did to yourself or others is normal. But you should ensure that regret does not send you into depression and ruin your health.
