Pollution is the addition of substances (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (heat, sound, or radioactivity) to the environment at a rate faster than it can be dispersed, diluted, decomposed, or recycled in some harmless form. Pollution can have serious negative effects on the environment and wildlife and seriously impacts human health and well-being. This is because pollution, even in tiny amounts can make its way up the food chain and enter the human body causing various diseases and allergies.
Top Types of Pollution
Land Pollution - Our land in cities and towns has become polluted by household garbage and industrial waste. Millions of tons of solid waste are generated every day worldwide that gets filled in landfills. But less than 30% gets recycled or composted. Items like plastics, glass, metals, rubber, leather, etc., do not get decomposed. They destroy the soil in and around the landfills causing permanent damage to the environment in that area. In addition to pollution and fire hazards, it also has commercial impacts as real estate prices are nosedive in such areas.
Water Pollution - This happens when chemicals and dangerous foreign substances get mixed in oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds by industries pumping their waste into water areas without proper filtration. Examples of water pollution are - Dumping solid wastes in the water, Releasing untreated industrial sewage into rivers, Human and animal waste, and agricultural materials like pesticides and fertilizers. In many countries, sewage is also pumped into rivers causing immense damage to the water purity and fish.
