As part of its long-standing mission to preserve and promote rich Peranakan culture and heritage, The Peranakan Association Singapore’s (TPAS’) annual Baba Nyonya International Convention returns for its 33rd edition on November 20.

Held at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, the hybrid physical-cum-virtual event will open with The Matriarchs, a play adapted from Stella Kon’s seminal Emily of Emerald Hill. Directed by Alvin Tan of The Necessary Stage, the play stars contemporary theatre veteran Ivan Heng as titular character Emily, with Emily’s mother-in-law, Mrs Gan, played by wayang Peranakan theatre icon GT Lye, who scripted the character himself.

Meanwhile, a three-hour symposium, anchored on the topic of “Keeping the Culture Alive”, will see experts, including historian Kwa Chong Guan, discuss Peranakan culture and identity, through its tangible and intangible heritage covering language, literature, rituals, style, food and theatre.

Here, we look at the elements of Nyonya style with Peranakan fashion designer Raymond Wong, who is also a vice-president of TPAS, and the Peranakan Museum curatorial team led by museum director Kennie Ting.
