The Truth About Sex Your Kids Need to Know
The Malaysian Women\'s Weekly|October 2016

With all sorts of information becoming easily accessible, it is vital to talk to your kids about sex and their reproductive health.

The Truth About Sex Your Kids Need to Know

Be An “Ask-able” Parent

Inevitably there comes a time when your kids will start asking questions about their bodies – where they came from, how they ended up in your stomach, why girls are different from boys, and so on.

As parents, we often sidestep the topic about the birds and the bees. But while you are trying to postpone “the talk”, your child may already going through puberty, a hormone fuelled stage of development as changes start to happen to his or her body.

From wet dreams to periods, your child will face these physical changes and more, in addition to emotional and mental growth. As they get older, innocent queries about their bodies will evolve to more complex questions about relationships. Though their questions may be subdued in their teen years, this does not mean you should stop the conversation.

“By ignoring or hushing them, you are not only distancing yourself from your child, you are also placing a mental block in their minds that prevent them from seeking answers on their sexual and reproductive health,” says Mary Pang, executive director of Federation of Reproductive Health Assocations (FRHAM), Malaysia.
