Nick Drainey finds history and wildlife hidden in scenic Balquhidder.
SCOTLAND is full of tales of the past, bringing invisitors and establishing the foundations of how we live today.
One of the most influential protagonists of old stories was Sir Walter Scott. His 1817 book, Rob Roy, catapulted the outlaw and folk hero into worldwide consciousness. Today, many visitors come to Balquhidder Parish Church to see the grave where he was laid to rest in 1734.
This type of historical remembrance goes on all over the country, but it would be good if, once in a while, more emphasis was given to the natural beauty we have.
For instance, brown signs by the roadside could also promote some of the wildlife which surrounds us.
Above Balquhidder I once enjoyed a stroll up Kirkton Glen in the snow, following red deer tracks and watching them among the higher crags and rocky outcrops overhead.
