However this particular Sunday was unusually mild. Arriving at our site my buddy Kevin and I eyed up the ridge and furrow field that we had been given permission to search. I was using my Minelab E-Trac and Kevin had chosen to use his Minelab CTX 3030. The grass was quite long, not an ideal field surface at all and consequently signals were sparse.

Half an hour into the search, though, a decent find made an appearance in the form of a Tealby penny of Henry II (Fig.1), although split and worn it was still a welcome find. These Henry II issues are, after all, quite scarce finds around here.

At that stage of course I had no idea just what lay in store for us finds wise, or indeed how exciting the day would turn out to be. Some 10 minutes later I got another signal with my E-Trac, not a particularly strong one, but my motto of ‘if in doubt, dig out’ prevailed. At around 6 inches down I pinpointed the target and carefully scooped away more handfuls of soil. I wasn’t really expecting anything other than maybe the usual lump of lead or similar.
