Your smartphone isn’t just for social media, games and shopping. It can actually become an important tool in your pursuit of fitness. Magandeep Singh walks us through a few of his favourite fitness apps
There was a time when running was considered a cheap sport. All one needed was to slip on a pair of comfy sneakers and step out. The rest was just about putting one foot in front of the other faster than usual and letting the road lead the way. Today, if you don’t have the latest shoes, glares, sweat wicking gear, compression socks, HR monitor and a funky water bottle when you leave the house every time, if you can’t remember your individual PBs (read personal bests), and don’t put up at least one post with a picture after every activity with a million hashtags, then you are either a beginner or not serious enough.
I almost fell into that trap, getting more obsessed with the gear and forgetting the real deal. That said, once equilibrium was gained, I can say that certain training aides certainly helped me become a stronger version of my previous self, quicker than it may have taken otherwise. What assisted me along the way was a combination of gadgets and apps that kept track of my activities and progress and allowed me to compare my progress along a timeline. Each time I finished an activity, it would automatically sync with the online platform and be available for me to observe and analyse on my laptop. I could tell how fast I was going, what my overall heart rate was, or at any point during the activity, the route taken and the elevation gained and then, more technical data such as my ground contact time, vertical oscillation, cadence and such. Without trying to befuddle you even before you begin, here are some apps that will ease your journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
