Age is no barrier to exercise, and youll be future proofing your mind and body in the process
Forget super skinny or terrifyingly buff. These days, fitness is all about strength, suppleness and stamina, no matter your age. Worldwide, people are living longer – some up to 100! – so staying strong, active and healthy as long as possible is vital.
Indeed, World Health Organization guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week, along with strength exercises to work your major muscles. Studies show exercise can help reduce the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and some cancers, while also keeping weight in check and protecting bone density (see Build your strength). It can ease menopausal symptoms, boost mood, aid sleep and reduce stress, too. But it’s more than that. “Pushing boundaries takes commitment, but the sense of achievement and well-being is empowering. It’s life-changing,” states personal trainer Clare La Terriere.
