As weddings take on every style and form imaginable, bestselling author Wendy Holden wishes that she could rewrite her own big day
I ’ve been married for nearly 25 years and think myself incredibly lucky. I would not change my husband Jon for the world. But I’d love to change my wedding.
Our 1993 ceremony in my home town was nothing if not traditional. Stiff silver-edged invites crawling with Palace script summoned guests to the full church monty. We were then immortalised on camera by a bossy photographer (who fell over backwards among the headstones, to much glee). A reception at a swanky hotel followed, complete with top table, receiving line, three-tier cake and evening celebration.
The format was the same my parents enjoyed (if that is the word) in the ’60s, and to which most people who married in the ’70s and ’80s adhered to. Looking back, I can’t help feeling I missed out.
I envy today’s brides, who can opt for any wedding they like, from festival style to rock and roll. Anything goes and everyone’s fine with it. How times have changed! Sensing the lack of spontaneity at our own bash, I tried to boho things up. Unsuccessfully.
