Trophy Ready?
Pole Fishing|November 2017

Alex Bones takes the all-new 16.1m Trophy-X-Type 80 for a lesson in resilience at a commercial carp venue that offers the perfect test ground. Let’s see if Tri-Cast’s latest model is made of super-tough-stuff…

Trophy Ready?

Made on the same mandrel as Tri-Cast’s flagship Excellence Pro you know before you even slide the Trophy-X Type 80 from its holdall that it has all the right ingredients!

The company has forged a reputation for strong poles and this model is no exception. I knew when I was on my way to test it at Shearsby Valley Lakes fishery that the pole’s strength was never going to be in doubt – what I was more curious about was how stiff it was and how it would perform at full length.

I’m used to fishing with flagship poles and, as such, my expectations these days are high of any pole carrying an RRP of £2,499.99!

So I set up on Willow Lake at a peg that quite literally offered it all. I needed the full 16.1m length to get to the stick-ups where the lake’s carp reside, and it was a swim that would allow me to test every bit of resilience the pole offered. Plenty of obstacles to steer hooked fish away from and around as well as an aerator and rope for good measure and, as such, plenty of places for them to snag me up, too!

Removing the pole from the holdall the sections felt reassuringly strong (as I expected), but once I pieced the pole together and shipped out I was surprised!
