I love riding my bike, but there comes a time in the year when I really love not riding it. It’s not that I switch off completely, because the off-season is as much preparation as recovery, but it’s a special feeling when you park the bike and close the wardrobe for a few weeks after 11 months of more or less daily routine. Some prefer to stay at home, jaded by the constant travel being a pro rider entails, or those who are not Europeans return home. My wife and I use the opportunity to escape, travel and mostly lie on a beach somewhere, drinking cocktails with my phone locked in the hotel safe.
