Thomas Grill's Oddball Bull
Successful Hunter|July - August 2017

Despite being busy with work, Thomas Grill headed into Wyoming’s unit 21 late in the afternoon, with bow in hand, to take advantage of the rut. The hunt was on public land on which he had hunted many times in the past, but the weather was hot, muggy and not very conducive to hunting. Thomas had his girlfriend, Jamilee Scandle, along for the adventure, and they hiked into the hills to check some locations where elk had been encountered in previous years.

Thomas Grill's Oddball Bull

After sitting on a waterhole for a few hours, not observing any elk, they began to work back to the truck to avoid getting caught in the evening darkness. Just before legal shooting light was about to expire, they noticed a bull feeding in a meadow adjacent to the waterhole where they had been sitting. At first glance, Thomas instantly saw unique antler growth and became excited. The pair hunkered down behind an aspen tree and began to aggressively work the bull with seductive elk calls. In the meantime, elk began to emerge from behind them too.
