The state own exploration giant ONGC has made a remarkable change of life and economy of industrially striving Tripura over past five decades.
Besides, its mission to explore and produce hydrocarbons in Tripura since 1962, ONGC has now covered an area of around 10,500 sqkm in the state, western flank of Assam-Arakan Basin. ONGC is the lone gas supplier to 726 MW capacity Palatana power plant, 100 MW power plant of NEEPCO at Monarchak, feeding more than 15000 vehicles of CNG and supplying pipeline gas to more than 20,000 kitchens of Agartala at present.
Since 1962, ONGC’s continuous efforts of exploration, unearthed the hydrocarbon potential of Tripura and ONGC stuck gas in the first exploratory well drilled in Baramura geological structure of Tripura between 1972 to 1974 and hence hydrocarbon potentials of Tripura Fold Belt could be established. Over the years, 11 gas fields were discovered in the state - Baramura (in the year 1975), Gojalia (in 1982), Manikyanagar (Rokhia in 1983), Konaban (in 1986), Agartala Dome (in 1987), Tichna (in 2000), Sonamura, Sundalbari (in 2007), Kunjaban (in 2007), Tulamura (in 2008) and Khubal (in 2009).
