Getting In The Way Of Business
GST has been a gamechanger reform. Although the transition to the new tax regime has been challenging for trade and industry, the government has been nimble in making amendments to the GST law to ease compliance and streamline procedures. The changes have cost the government revenue, and the downtrend in GST revenue has prompted it to introduce an e-way bill mechanism to check evasion. This, the eway bill will achieve by tracking the movement of goods.
The mechanism itself is not new to Indian taxpayers—even in the erstwhile VAT regime, many states had waybills, e-sugam, entry/ road permits etc. What makes the e-way bill unique is a validity period based on distance and real-time updation to reflect the details of vehicle and consignment.
