Prelude
The first draft of the script of BJP's phenomenal rise in the northeast was written in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP won 282 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha and storming into power by dethroning the Congress party that tasted success for 10 years on the trot.
Out of the 25 seats in the Northeast, BJP and its allies won in 10 seats with Assam contributing the highest seat share.
Out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the BJP won in 7 seats- an increase of 3 seats compared to the previous Lok Sabha polls.
This rise in three seats in Assam, some say, was the spark that later ignited the party's phenomenal rise in the region.
But before getting into the party's rise in the northeast, one needs to see that BJP gradually lost its base in some of its strong bastions like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while it also faced stiff competition from Congress in Gujarat as well.
Predictions were made that BJP will soon fade away into oblivion and Congress will reappear and no one even gave them an iota of chance from the northeast- which, however, later proved to be wrong.
Right from the (then) Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to the problems of illegal migration the region, the northeast has had a set of historical problems, which the BJP dodge with ease and make inroads in the entire region a strong Congress bastion. Tripura is the only state with a strong CPI (M) presence.
The Journey Begins
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) juggernaut in the northeast comprehensively began to roll from the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, which was further cemented after the 2016 Assam Assembly polls.
The Tarun Gogoi-led Congress came into power in 2001 at the backdrop of the darkest chapter in the history of Assam.
