WITH their big smiles, hands-on know-how, and can-do attitude, Fixer Upper’s hubby and wife team of Chip and Joanna Gaines are reality TV sweethearts devoting themselves to restoring rundown houses for eager buyers. Yet fans of their superpopular show — the most successful in HGTV history — might be disappointed to learn that the series may not entirely be on the up and up.

While viewers believe they’re watching the joyous moment when Chip and Joanna first show a potential homeowner the perfect property they’ve chosen, behind the scenes, claims one former participant, the prospective buyer has already purchased the home! “You have to be under contract [in the process of buying your house] to be on the show,” alleges season 3 participant David Ridley. Viewers see Chip and Joanna present a number of possible properties — “but you already [own] one,” adds David.
