The three judge bench has sent across a strong message to the society that this kind of barbarism against women cannot be tolerated in a civilised society
What happened on December 16, 2012 on a moving bus at Vasant Vihar in New Delhi sent shockwaves not only throughout the country but across the world as well. The question that stared at the humanity is how can some people who live in the same society can be so cruel, barbaric and inhuman against a person of the same society. Nirbhaya, the name given to the brave heart girl, became a revolution in itself. People came out on the streets in protest against the heinous crime not only in Delhi but all over the country.
This kind of protest against rape and murder of a girl was never seen before. People were up in arms and could not believe how some people living in this so called civilized society can stoop to this level to commit such barbaric crime against a woman. The gang rape and murder of the 23-year-old girl Nirbhaya was so horrific that it shook the inner conscience of the people at large. Reams of paper were filled with the details of the story every day, hours of debate were held on prime-time news channels following the incident, but there was only one question in the minds of the people — when will Nirbhaya get justice. The law to decide such cases were there for a long time.
