Rishi Sunak yesterday slammed Russian demands for a ceasefire as “completely meaningless”, insisting forces would just regroup and attack Ukraine again.

The Prime Minister urged Western nations to provide Kyiv with more artillery, air defence systems and armoured vehicles to push Kremlin forces out for good.

Military chiefs are adamant that weapons supplies to Ukraine may prove decisive during the winter months ahead.

Speaking in Latvia, Mr Sunak confirmed the UK will give Ukraine hundreds of thousands of rounds of artillery ammunition next year to repel Russian forces.

The PM was addressing a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force – Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway – in Riga, and said Western leaders must focus on weaponry.

He said: “There are three priorities for us to consider as we think about next year.
